Finding Light in Tokyo's Backstreets

Chasing the Golden Hour

There's something magical about the way light falls through the narrow alleys of Shimokitazawa in the late afternoon. The buildings crowd together, leaving just a sliver of sky, and the sunlight catches on hanging laundry, potted plants, and the worn wooden facades of tiny shops.

I spent three days wandering these streets with nothing but my camera and a vague sense of direction. No shot list, no plan — just following the light.

What I Learned

The best compositions often appear when you stop looking for them:

  • A cat stretching in a doorway
  • Steam rising from a ramen shop
  • The way shadows pool at the base of a vending machine at dusk

Sometimes the most honest photographs come from simply being present.
